Today, developments concerning environmental conservation, disaster prevention, and other high-tech fields are continuously broadening in scope and range that the tasks have become increasingly more difficult to be dealt with by individual researchers. Recent advancement in information technology in particular, is not only inducing drastic changes in our social life, but projects uncertainly in allocating research priorities pertaining to development of science and technology as well. On the other, the phenomenon of decreasing number in childbirth presents some risks in reforming the bastion of academic research as the number of university applicants begins to decline.

Faced with these realities, the academe is urged to adopt significant changes in order to survive the race among competitive colleagues within the academic circle. Evident in the reorganization of graduate schools in various universities, this calls for more serious reconsiderations not only in its contribution to the society in general through quality education, but equally in strengthening substantive and essential research. And while the university remains to be a pivotal institution in promoting scientific research, it also plays a major role in raising the awareness on the relevance of university based research. As such, the academe should double its efforts (in order) to attract and encourage more research funding from the private sector, especially the industrial sector. Thus, we are entering an era that collaboration between the academe and the industrial sector becomes an indispensable scheme that universities must consider.

The RIST must continuously fulfill its mission as a research institute in the face of rapid changes in the in the field of research. Hence, the RIST finds it necessary not only to provide modern facilities and high-tech equipment for joint research but also to promote and support research collaboration. The RIST is making its best efforts to develop talents and tap potential resources in the College of Science and Technology, and lead the university in creating a better society through active collaboration between the academe and the industrial sector.
